Sturgeon Fishing on the Columbia River
Fishing for Sturgeon has made the Columbia River world famous. These prehistoric fish
have made a name for themselves providing an excellent sport opportunity. Sturgeon are
known for their awesome fighting ability and their delicious taste.

The best months for catching Sturgeon are from April through July, when fish move to and
from spawning beds and seek migratory food. The Columbia River holds the largest
population of white Sturgeon in North America.

Dams are an important element in the life of big sturgeon, because they offer food and
running water. The vast reach of water laying between The Dalles Dam and John Day Dam
on the Columbia is known as Celilo Pool. Within those waters that often exceed 150 foot
depths cruise some true monsters of the deep; Sturgeon that can reach beyond 15' in length
and weight,..... well you guess?!

Keeper Sturgeon range from 42 to 60 inches, but catch and release of Sturgeon over 10
feet provide a year-round fishing opportunity on the Columbia River. Sturgeon fishing runs
all year with peak catch and release periods in June and July.
